Georgia Download Destination
People who enjoy listening to audio books while they are traveling but are not interested in spending the money necessary to purchase audio books, should know about the Georgia Download Destination.
The Georgia Public Service Library has recently come to an agreement with Overdrive, one of the leading digital materials suppliers in the United States. Participating GPLS systems will now be able to provide their patrons with downloadable audio books from Overdrive.
The Coastal Plain Regional Library system has chosen to participate in this program. CPRL consists of the libraries in Tift, Berrien, Cook, Irwin and Turner Counties. Residents of those counties are eligible to use this service. Funding for the participation is provided by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation.
To participate, one must have a valid unexpired PINES library card and your home library must be in a system that participates in this program. Also, you must not have outstanding fines or fees associated with your account. In addition, you must know your PIN number. If you do not know it, just ask a library staff member to give it to you the next time you are in the library.
If you do not have a library card, this is another reason to get one. Library cards are free and easy to get. Most importantly, a library card will provide you with free materials that would cost a significant amount if you purchased them yourself.
There is a short guided tour for first-time visitors and a piece of software that must be downloaded to your computer before you can download the audio books. Some of these downloads can be burned to CDs after they have been downloaded to your machine. All can be transferred to compatible portable devices.
There is a list of all the different players that Overdrive supports on the website, so you can make sure yours will work before you begin. Because of compatibility issues, these files cannot be played on iPods at this time. However, Microsoft and Apple are engaged in discussions that are predicted to work out this problem by Fall 2008.
