The Big Green Reading Machine is a joint project of the Tifton-Tift County Public Library and the Tift County School Board. Big Green started off life as a 1988 Winnebago SuperChief Recreational Vehicle. It has now been gutted out, new flooring and wall covering added, shelving and space for a small computer lab in the back added. There are many people in our community that find it difficult to get to the library; those underserved individuals are the focus of this project. Not only will library services be available through this service, but the library is committed to providing a steady flow of reading materials that can just be given out to people who would like to take it home, without having the responsibility of having to return it.
The Big Green Reading Machine will follow the summer feeding program, providing book and programming to groups of kids that use this service. Once school start, this “literacy wagon” will be available for after school programs, festivals and other special events as needed.
Interested in this project? We are always looking for gently used children’s’ books and magazines to distribute through the bus. We also appreciate monetary donations to contribute towards the care and feeding of the Reading Machine. Some of our current sponsors are ConAgra, Target, the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation and Georgia Power. In this age of shrinking services and budgets, we could not do what we do without their help.
